The Invisible Forest

We are working with partners including Google, University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies and The Nature Conservancy to restore Tasmania’s Giant Kelp forests and the ocean ecosystems they create. Photo by Andrew Wilson

Museomics

Collections are a resource for understanding how Australian species have responded and adapted to environmental change… and we’ve developed new methods to read the stories in their DNA.

Native bees

This is Amegilla (Asaropoda) bombiformis. We are scientifically describing 500 unknown Australian native bee species to address this knowledge gap in Australia’s biodiversity.

Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners

The National Research Collections Australia recognises the cultural value and significance of the specimens housed within the Diversity Building. We acknowledge the Ngunnawal People as the Traditional Owners of the land where Diversity has been established, and we pay our respects to their Elders past and present. We recognise the unique relationship that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples maintain to their Country, and we acknowledge all Traditional Owners from where the specimens have been collected.

Welcome to Diversity

Our new collections building, Diversity, holds more than 13 million specimens. They are a vital resource for biodiversity, biosecurity and biodiscovery research.
